Purchasing window coverings for your home can feel overwhelming. I’ve seen clients buy ready-made window treatments only to realize they wasted their money. Others bring me in for custom treatments, only to discover the investment is beyond their budget or not practical for their needs. With over 30 years of experience in window coverings, I’m here to guide you on when to opt for ready-made and when custom is the right choice—saving you time, money, and stress.
Understanding the Difference: Custom vs. Ready-Made
Ready-Made Window Treatments
Ready-made window treatments are mass-produced, typically in overseas factories, and come in limited widths, lengths, and fabric options. Some may include linings, but others do not. Since they are made quickly, hems can be uneven, and the stitching is often visible. Additionally, they are packaged in plastic, requiring steaming or ironing upon installation, which can sometimes cause them to hang incorrectly.
The biggest advantage of ready-mades is their affordability. However, they are not designed for longevity. The lifespan of ready-made curtains depends on fabric quality, sun exposure, and usage—ranging anywhere from 3 to 10 years. Synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, tend to last longer than natural fabrics like cotton or linen, which can fade or wear out more quickly. High-traffic areas and rooms with significant sunlight exposure will also shorten their lifespan.
Custom Window Treatments
Custom window treatments are made in local workrooms using high-quality, carefully selected fabrics. Unlike ready-mades, they can be crafted to any width or length, ensuring a perfect fit. Various lining options—including blackout, interlining, dim-out, and bump—enhance light control, insulation, and fabric protection.
Custom treatments are sewn with meticulous craftsmanship. Blind stitching ensures that thread is not visible, and thousands of fabric choices allow for perfect coordination with your decor. These treatments are professionally installed to ensure proper height and alignment. Unlike ready-mades, custom window coverings do not arrive in plastic packaging but are carefully wrapped to protect them from damage during transport.
While custom window treatments are a significant investment, their durability and superior quality make them worthwhile. Many of my clients still have their custom treatments in place 30 years later, particularly valances and bedroom draperies with minimal sun exposure. Additionally, high-end materials used in custom treatments often contain healthier, PFAS-free fabrics, avoiding harmful chemicals found in some ready-mades.
When to Choose Ready-Made vs. Custom
Although I have my own drapery workroom, I don’t always recommend custom window treatments. Here are situations where ready-mades may be the better option:
- Temporary Living Situations – If you are frequently moving between homes, apartments, or rental properties, ready-made window coverings are a practical choice.
- Short-Term Commitment – If you plan to stay in one place for fewer than three years, custom treatments may not be a worthwhile investment.
- Frequent Decor Changes – If you enjoy changing colors and styles often, ready-mades provide flexibility without long-term commitment.
- Pet-Friendly Homes – Homes with pets that might damage or soil floor-length draperies may benefit from ready-made treatments or alternatives like top treatments and blinds.
- Budget Constraints – If finances are tight, ready-mades offer an affordable solution until you’re ready to invest in custom.
However, if you own a home valued at $500,000 or more, custom window treatments are often expected and can enhance the home’s value. Additionally, unique window sizes, multi-story rooms, and specialized needs (such as motorized treatments or light control) typically require custom solutions.
Why Quality Matters
Investing in well-crafted window treatments has long-term benefits:
- Durability & Longevity – High-quality materials last longer, saving money over time.
- Enhanced Comfort & Functionality – Properly designed treatments improve usability and ambiance.
- Aesthetic Appeal – Custom treatments create a polished, cohesive look.
- Increased Property Value – Professionally designed decor adds to your home’s market appeal.
- Improved Well-Being – A beautifully decorated home fosters relaxation and enjoyment.
- Avoiding Costly Mistakes – Poorly chosen or installed treatments often require expensive corrections.
The Cost of Custom Window Treatments
Pricing custom window treatments is complex, as several factors influence the final cost:
- Window Size – Larger windows require more fabric and labor.
- Fabric Selection – Prices range from $40 to $275+ per yard.
- Hardware – High-quality rods, finials, and brackets support heavier fabrics and enhance the design.
- Layering – Multi-layered treatments (e.g., sheers, drapes, valances) increase costs.
For mid-range custom treatments, a rough estimate is around $250 per linear foot. For example, a 6-foot-wide window with a cornice may cost approximately $1,500. We provide one comprehensive price that includes fabric, lining, fabrication, hardware, installation, and taxes, with a 75% deposit required upfront and the balance due upon installation.
Important Considerations When Ordering Custom Treatments
- Fabric Availability – Fabric stock and prices can change; delays or discontinuations may require re-selection.
- Non-Returnable – Once fabric is cut and treatments are installed, all sales are final.
- Backorders – If a fabric experiences multiple backorders, selecting an alternative may be necessary to avoid indefinite delays.
